Device for carriageway lane recognition has a radiation source (S) with a number of serially arranged LEDs. An electronic control circuit is used for sequential control of the LEDs and a photo-detector element (D) detects light reflected back from the road surface. The invention also relates to a corresponding method for operating an inventive device in which brightness values and contrast are determined in order to detect road marking positions.
