A method of manufacturing wood veneer comprises making a block comprising wood laminations of substantially equal length and breadth, the laminations being separated into two sections by a wedge-shaped portion arranged lengthwise of the block and having its base co-extensive with one end of the block and obtaining wood veneer from the block by mounting the block in a rotary slicing machine with the axis of the machine passing through the base of the wedge-shape portion, and slicing veneers from the block. The block is formed by stacking a number of glued laminations 1 of equal length and breadth one upon the other with all the grain running in the same direction. The wedge-shaped portion consists of a number of glued laminations 2 of successively decreasing length and the same breadth stacked on the laminations 1. A similar stack 4 of glued laminations to those in 1 is placed on the portion 2. Finally, a set of laminations 3 without glue and corresponding to the wedgeshaped portion is placed on top of the stack and the assembly placed between the platens of a press. Upon removal from the press, the laminations 3 are removed and the block is placed between the centres of the slicing machine and a continuous veneer is peeled from the block. The veneer produced has V- shaped flowers 8 which are all in the same direction and separated by substantially straight grain sections 9. With the axis of the slicing machine passing through the centre of the base of the wedge-shape portions, the V-shaped flowers are all of the same angle. With the axis to one side of the base, adjacent V-shaped flowers have different angles. |
