摘要 1,109,861. Welded bags. M. LEHMACHER, and H. LEHMACHER. 20 April, 1965 [17 April, 1964; 28 April, 1964; 5 June, 1964], No. 16631/65. Heading B8K. [Also in Division B5] An intermittent welded seam 15, Fig. 4, across a gusset, and through at least the two walls of the gusset, at the top of a plastics bag defines a gap 16 through which a drinking straw may be inserted between the gusset walls. The fold between the gusset walls may be cut throughout its length, Fig. 4, or only in the region of the gap 16, Fig. 9 (not shown), to facilitate the insertion of the straw into the bag. In the embodiment where four layers are welded together at 15, two welds 17 and 18 made either through all four layers or through only the two gusset walls, Fig. 9 (not shown), may be made to further define the opening for the straw. Alternatively, adhesion between the gusset walls may be obtained by glueing or " milling " the surfaces together, the adhesion being broken by the insertion of a straw. Double side welds (39), (39a), Fig. 16 (not shown), instead of the single side weld 21, Fig. 4. may be made to define pockets in which a straw may be kept before use. The bag is filled through its bottom 22 and sealed. A rectangular bottomed bag may be obtained either by providing a gusset, Fig. 28 (not shown), in its bottom side or by welds (52), (53), Fig. 35 (not shown), across the corners of the bag bottom. In a further embodiment where the gusset walls have unequal lengths, Fig. 30, three layers of the bag are welded together in producing the weld 15 and the fold joining the longer gusset wall to the adjacent bag wall is cut to form a filling opening which is welded at 47 after filling. The bags may be made (see Division B5) from a double side gussetted tube cut down the middle, Fig. 10 (not shown), or from one or two flat webs with side gussets inserted. Figs. 13 and 14 (not shown). 1,109,877. Shrink packaging. IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. 11 Oct., 1965 [27 Oct., 1964], No. 43821/64. Heading B8C. A heat-shrinkable wrapper 1 is folded around the end of an article 2 by firstly folding in the sides 4 of the wrapper projecting beyond the end of the article, and then folding down and sealing the wider flaps 5, so that on heat shrinking the wrapper around the article no " dog ears " project at the corners of the package. The method is suitable for packaging articles having rectangular or oval cross-sections, and the flaps may be sealed either symmetrically, Fig. 3 (not shown) or with one flap folded fully across the end of the article, and sealed against the other flap, excess material being removed, Fig. 4 (not shown). On heat shrinking of the wrapper surplus air is expelled through openings (7), Fig. 3 (not shown). Gas sterilization may be applied to products wrapped in this way before the wrapper is shrunk. The wrapper may initially be in the form of a sheet in which case it is folded around the article and sealed along the line 3, Fig. 2, by a bead seal, Alternatively, the wrapper may be of tubular form initially, or may be a bag having one open end, in which case the closed end is preferably of similar shape to that of the end of the article being packaged, so that it will shrink into snug contact therewith.
