PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a ring laser type gyro with a satisfactory signal-noise ratio by suppressing noises due to spontaneous emission and limiting the number of oscillation modes by a method which will not a lock-in cause. SOLUTION: Noises generated by spontaneous emission light, that combines clockwise laser beam 11 with a counterclockwise laser beam 12, are suppressed by light 21 generated in a non-orbital course 1. Because of the existence of an asymmetrical taper 7, the oscillation threshold of the clockwise laser beam is smaller than the oscillation threshold of the counterclockwise laser beam. As a result, when both laser beams are oscillating, the light intensity of the clockwise laser beam is higher than the light intensity of the counterclockwise laser beam. The end face of the course 1 is inclined relative to the laser beam propagating direction, in order to avoid lock-in, in which progressive waves and regressive waves are together combined to cause oscillation only in one of the modes.
