PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a distance measuring instrument capable of measuring an accurate moving distance with high accuracy at a low cost, by minimizing the effects of temperature and humidity in an environment, where it is disposed, even it is affected by them. SOLUTION: This distance measuring instrument has a motor adding to its steps by rotating to a prescribed angle in response to a prescribed signal, a movement member moved by the driving force of the motor, an encoder for outputting an output value according to a moving distance of the movement member when the movement member is moved by the motor, a determination means for determining the moving distance of the movement means per unit output value outputted from the encoder, based on the number of steps added to by the motor, and a distance measuring means for measuring the moving distance of the movement member, based on moving distance of the determination means determined of the movement member per unit output value, outputted from the encoder and based on the output value outputted from the encoder.
