PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an engine control device capable of suppressing the deterioration of a function of cooling exhaust gas returned to an intake system. SOLUTION: This engine control device is provided with an engine that outputs power by the combustion of fuel; an exhaust gas recirculation system for returning a part of exhaust gas produced by the combustion of fuel to an intake system of the engine; a cooling medium for cooling the exhaust gas returned to the intake system by the exhaust gas recirculation system; and a cooling device driven by the power of the engine and allowing the cooling medium to flow. The engine control device is further provided with a determining means for determining the operation and stop of the engine on the basis of the physical quantity related to the temperature of the exhaust gas (step S1 or step S6).
