PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To stably supply media stacked in a multi-layer in taking a medium from a lower section in a paper feeder. SOLUTION: This paper feeder is provided with a pick roller 3 which takes out a plurality of stacked media from the lower side, a planet gear 17 and a weight 23, which is a weight to give pressing force to the media from a section above the media and becomes a first state in which the weight doesn't give pressing force to the media while the planet gear 17 is positioned at a first position, and becomes a second state in which the weight gives pressing force to the media while the planet gear 17 is positioned at a second position. When a motor is rotated in a first direction, the planet gear 17 moves to the first position, and the weight 23 becomes the first state in which the weight 23 doesn't give pressing force to the media. When the motor is rotated in a second direction, which is opposite to the first direction, the planet gear 17 moves to the second position, and the weight 23 becomes the second state, giving pressing force to the media.
