PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an automatic focusing device capable of focusing a subject existing on the closest side at a high speed by using an evaluation value calculated from the high frequency component of a picture signal. SOLUTION: A focusing area 94 is divided into a plurality of blocks (1 to 4) to detect the peak of the evaluation value concerning the respective blocks. When the moving direction of a lens in the case of AF search is a direction from infinity to vicinity, searching operation is finished when the peak of the evaluation value is detected in all the divided blocks, and a lens position corresponding to a peak detected finally is judged to be a focusing position. In the case of searching operation from vicinity to infinity, searching operation is finished when the peak of the evaluation value with respect to one of the plurality of blocks is detected, and the lens position corresponding to a peak detected first is judged to be a focusing position. Furthermore, the evaluation value of the area 94 before division is combined and the interruption judgment of searching operation is performed to attain high speed. |
