摘要 <p>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve exhaust performance, while promoting warming-up of an engine, in an engine that is operated by selectively switching spark ignition combustion and self-ignition combustion. SOLUTION: When a catalyst is deactivated and a cooling water temperature Te is higher than a first threshold Te1, the control apparatus makes the engine to perform the self-ignition combustion while operating a heater for heating the catalyst. When the cooling water temperature Te is lower than the first threshold Te1, the control apparatus makes the engine to perform the spark ignition combustion. When the catalyst is activated and the cooling water temperature Te is higher than a second threshold Te2 (>Te1), the control apparatus makes the engine perform the self-ignition combustion and stop idling. When the catalyst is activated and the cooling water temperature Te is higher than the first threshold Te1 but lower than the second threshold Te2, the control apparatus makes the engine to perform the self-ignition combustion or spark ignition combustion.</p>
