PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing a nonionic surfactant. SOLUTION: An aliphatic alcohol alkylene oxide adduct is produced by the addition reaction of a 2 or more C alkylene oxide with an alcohol alkylene oxide adduct, which is obtained by adding the 2 or more C alkylene oxide to a 1-24C aliphatic alcohol (a2) in the presence of at least one catalyst selected from the group consisting of a perhalogenic acid (salt), a sulfate, a phosphate and a nitrate and characterized by that a distribution constant c' calculated from the formula (4'): c'=(v'+n0 '/n00 '-1)/[Ln(n00 '/n0 ')+n0 '/n00 '-1] [wherein v' is the mean addition mol number of the added alkylene oxide per 1 mol of the aliphatic alcohol (a2), n00 ' is the mol number of the aliphatic alcohol (a2) used in the reaction and n0 ' is the unreacted aliphatic alcohol (a2)] is not more than 1.0, in the presence of an alkali catalyst. |
