1351449 Ball and socket joints ITW Ltd 26 Aug 1971 [8 Sept 1970] 42946/70 Heading E2F In a ball and socket joint, socket member 2, moulded from plastics includes a spherical recess 4 to receive integrally moulded spherical head, shank and arm 20. The head, of diameter substantially equal diameter to the diameter of the socket, terminates at flat surface 23, and is divided into four parts by two slots 24, which extend from the surface 23 to junction 22. There is a bore through the shank and head, of which part 26 is a clearance fit for head 30 of screw 32, part 34 is of hexagonal crosssection and of such a size that screw 32 can cut threads into the longer sides, and part 36 lying in the head is of diminishing diameter towards surface 23. When assembled the leading edge of the tends to spread the four parts of the head 16 away from one another thus increasing the frictional grip of the head within the socket. In a modification the socket member has an opening therein remote from the shank through which is passed a screw to spread the four parts of the head. The bore through the spherical head into the junction of the head and shank is blind. The socket member 2, carrying flange 6 and lugs 12 for mounting the socket in a square hole. Arm 20 may carry a motor vehicle sun visor. Specified plastics are nylon and acetal materials. |
