PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a new phosphine compound as a raw material useful for preparing para-hydroxyphenyldiphenylphosphine or other hydroxyphenyldiphenylphosphines which are thermostabilizers for thermoplastic resins. SOLUTION: A Grignard reagent of formula II (wherein X is chlorine, bromine or iodine) is allowed to react with a phosphine diphenylhalide of formula III (wherein Y is identical to or different from X and is chlorine, bromine or iodine) to prepare a diphenylphosphine of formula I. Subsequently, a tetrahydrofuran solution or a diethyl ether solution of the diphenylphosphine is treated with a concentrated aqueous solution of hydrogen chloride at a room temperature to detach a tertiary butyl group and generate a phosphonium salt of the diphenylphosphine of formula IV (wherein Z is chlorine or bromine), which is treated with an alkali to generate a hydroxyphenyldiphenylphosphine of formula V.
