PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for efficiently manufacturing an aromatic carboxylic acid or an aromatic carboxylic acid anhydride without requiring special reaction equipment. SOLUTION: The aromatic carboxylic acid or the aromatic carboxylic acid anhydride is produced by oxidizing an aromatic compound having an alkyl group or a lower order oxidation group thereof bonded to its aromatic ring by oxygen in the presence of an imide compound catalyst (A) having a cyclic imide skeleton represented by formula (1) [wherein, X is an oxygen atom or -OR group (wherein, R is a protective group for a hydrogen atom or a hydroxy group)] and an acid anhydride (B). As the acid anhydride (B), for example, acetic acid anhydride is designated. |
