PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a compound having a thiophene backbone and exhibiting an excellent antibacterial activity against gram-positive bacteria and resistant gram-positive bacteria. SOLUTION: This compound is represented by the formula [wherein X is =CH-R7 , =C(R7 )2 , -O-, -S- or =N-R10 ; R1 , R2 , R3 and R4 are each H, a halogen or a lower alkyl, lower alkoxy or nitro group; R5 , R6 , R7 and R8 , are each H or a lower alkyl or phenyl group provided when there are two groups represented by R5 , R6 , R7 , or R8 on one carbon atom, they may be the same or different; R9 is a halogenated lower alkyl group; R10 is an alkanoyl, benzoyl, lower alkyloxycarbonyl, benzyloxycarbonyl or benzenesulfonyl group; and n is 1 or 2].
