A method of ascertaining the number of remaining sheets available for a printer comprising the steps of: determining a measure associated with an amount of paper remaining in a printer; and calculating a number of remaining pages of paper from the measure. Preferably a sensor 308 takes a first measurement y<SB>0</SB> and a second measurement y<SB>1</SB> after a page has been fed to the printer and from this the thickness of a page is calculated. Using the calculation and the second measurement (the height of the stack of remaining sheets) the number of remaining pages may be calculated. The sensor may be wireless, sonar, infra-red, a laser beam, electromagnetic or mechanical. |
