PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an ink jet printer which can check an abnormality of a carriage travel system for scanning a printing head easily in a short time and can eventually reduce maintenance costs. SOLUTION: In the ink jet printer for printing by scanning the carriage having the printing head loaded in a direction intersecting a paper transfer direction, there are provided scanning speed detecting means (45 and 46) for detecting an amount related to a scanning speed of the carriage at least at a plurality of points of a printing region, a fluctuation information extracting means for extracting fluctuation information indicating a bias of the scanning speed on the basis of the detection result by the scanning speed detecting means (45 and 46), and a fluctuation information storage means for storing the extracted fluctuation information.
