PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a process for preparing thiolactones of formula (2) by sulfurating lactones of formula (1) and subsequently reducing them with zinc, wherein polysulfides which are generated as by-products through sulfuration are sufficiently reduced while inhiditing over-reduction. SOLUTION: In the process for preparing thiolactones of formula (2) by sulfurating lactones of formula (1) and subsequently reducing them with zinc under an acidic condition, the reduction treatment is performed in the presence of lead and cadmium at a total amount of from 650 to 1,500 ppm against zinc.
