A mechanism for converting rotary motion of a cam-shaft 12 into reciprocating motion of an I. C. engine poppet valve 14 comprises a shaft 24 supporting a rocker arm 26 and having a chamber 32 containing a member 42 in wedge contact with a member 50 contacting the rocker arm. Oil from the engine oil pump is supplied to the chamber 32 through a check valve 38 to move the piston 42, member 50 and rocker arm 26 to take up any clearance. The contact surfaces 46 and 52 between the piston 42 and member 50 can be convex and concave respectively. The piston 42 may be positioned by resilient or adjustable means in place of oil under pressure. A passage may be formed through the piston 42 to conduct lubricating oil to the surfaces 46 and 52. |
