Novel pyridylquinazolinones of the general formula wherein R is a hydrogen atom or a C 1-3 alkyl or C 1-3 haloalkyl group, R<SP>1</SP> is a hydrogen or halogen atom or a C 1-3 alkyl, C 1-3 haloalkyl, C 1-3 alkoxy or nitro group, R<SP>2</SP> is a halogen atom or a C 1-3 alkyl, C 1-3 haloalkyl, C 1-3 alkoxy or nitro group, and X is a chlorine or bromine atom or a nitro or C 1-3 haloalkyl group, are prepared by reaction of an anthranilic acid derivative of the general formula wherein Z is a hydroxyl or alkoxy group, a halogen atom or the group -O-M in which M is an alkali metal, with an aminopyridine derivative of the general formula Pharmaceutical compositions having central nervous system depressive activity comprise as active ingredient a pyridylquinazolinone of the first general formula above, together with a pharmacologically acceptable carrier.
