1,183,585. Ethylenic copolymers containing silicon. MIDLANDS SILICONES Ltd. 2 June, 1967 [2 June, 1966; 12 Oct., 1966], Nos. 24683/66 and 45655/66. Heading C3P. An organic polymer comprising a carbon chain backbone resulting from the polymerization of at least one vinylic monomer, said chain having linked thereto at least one unit of the formula derived from a compound of formula where R is a divalent aliphatic hydrocarbon radical, R<SP>1</SP> is hydrogen, or a monovalent hydrocarbon or halohydrocarbon radical, Z is a monovalent olefinically - unsaturated hydrocarbon radical, X is a hydrolysable alkoxy or acyloxy radical (although up to 2% of the X may be chlorine) and n is 0, 1 or 2, is obtained by copolymerizing the monomers under substantially anhydrous but otherwise conventional, conditions. The copolymers may be cured by moisture, optional in the presence of silanol condensation catalysts. The examples relate to the copolymerization of (vinylphenyl) ethyltriethoxysilane or (vinyl phenyl) ethyldimethoxymethylsilane with styrene, ethyl acrylate, acrylonitrile or methyl, n-butyl or n-octyl methacrylates, and the terpolymerization of the former with acrylonitrile and ethyl acrylate, using benzoyl peroxide or di-t-butyl peroxide as catalysts and in the presence of butanethiol and dibutyl phthalate, the polymers being cured using atmospheric moisture and optionally a dibutyl tin diacetate catalyst.
