PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To make the dynamic range of the light quantity on a photoreceptor larger by diminishing the variation in a light quantity transmissivity by using a surface emitting laser diode array. SOLUTION: The light emitting points of the surface emitting LDs 12 are so arranged that their polarization directions are made the same. Accordingly, the surface emitting LDs 12 are rotated, the polarization directions of all of the light emitting points change at the same time. The transmissivity of light can be changed by an optical unit. Even if the light quantity is the same, the dynamic range of the light quantity on the photoreceptor can be made larger. Also, the intervals in the vertical scanning of the light emitting points emitted before and after the rotation of the surface emitting LDs 12 are the same and therefore the spot intervals on the photoreceptor are the same. Resolution can be easily changed by selecting the light emitting points where the light is emitted.
