PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a device for maintaining head discharge characteristics which can cap and wipe by a simple constitution and by a stable operation at all times, and an ink-jet printer with the same. SOLUTION: There are provided a wiping means 110 for wiping a printing head, a capping means 130 for sealing the printing head, a suction means 150 for sucking the interior of a cap of the capping means which seals the printing head, a driving means 170 for driving to position the wiping means and the capping means to a predetermined position and driving a suction means, a means 112a, etc., for guiding and fixing when the wiping means is positioned, and a means 133b, etc., for guiding and fixing when the capping means is positioned. The wiping means and the capping means can thus be held to constant positions and positioned highly accurately at all times.
