Production of a hydrogen generator, in which a reaction mixture can be forced under a pressure drop through thin catalyst layer(s) of large area, comprises: (1) pressing copper (Cu) powder, especially dendritic Cu, to a thin, strongly compressed molded layer; (2) producing a reticular Cu support by sintering the molding in a reducing atmosphere; and (3) activating the surface to form the catalyst layer. An Independent claim is also included for a hydrogen generator with a catalyst made by the above method.
