PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To surely detect a foreign matter and to stop the movement of a sewing needle without obstructing sewing work. SOLUTION: Two light receiving parts 50b are arranged upwards so as to surround the vertical back-and-forth movement area of the sewing needle 7 on the upper surface of a presser holder 46 covering a cloth presser foot 47 and a photosensor is provided so as to arrange two light projecting parts 50a downwards on an upper part facing them. At the time of detecting that light from the light projecting parts 50a is interrupted by the foreign matter in the light receiving parts 50b, a controller operates a pulse motor 24 for needle swing/needle release, moves a needle bar release mechanism 25, interrupts driving power transmission to a needle bar 6 and releases it.
