<p>Hydroxybiarylphosphanes of formula (I) are new; in which Ar-Ar = biphenyl, 1-phenylnaphthyl or 1,1'-binaphthyl; R<1>, R<2> = F, Cl, 1-8 C alkyl, 1-8 C alkoxy or opt. substd. aryl; a, b = 0-4; the Ar-P and Ar-O bonds are in the o-positions to the Ar-Ar bond; R<3>, R<4> = 1-8 C alkyl, 4-10 C cycloalkyl, 7-9 C alkaryl or Ar<3>-(R<5>)n; Ar<3> = 6-10 C aryl; R<5> = 1-8 C alkyl, 1-8 C alkoxy, F, Cl, CF3, 2-8 C dialkylamino or -CH2H(1-3 C alkyl)2; n = 0-5; or -R<3>-R<4>- = a chain with 3-5 members, opt. with 1 or 2 annelated 6-10 C aromatic ring (systems), forming a 4-6-membered ring with the P atom. Cpds. in which Ar<3>-(R<5>)n is not phenyl or phenyl substd. by halogen, 1-8 C alkyl or 1-8 C alkoxy if Ar-Ar = biphenyl or 1,1'-binaphthyl and R<3> = R<4> are excluded.
