PURPOSE: A method for correcting colors of a picture communication system is provided to correct deterioration in colors caused by a difference in automatic white balancing of cameras and gamma correction in the event of restoration of pictures between different kinds of video phones. CONSTITUTION: In a picture communication system that compresses images to transmits the compressed images and decompresses the compressed images to display them, a compressed image is received and decoded and a color difference signal detected by decoding is converted into a color signal. Automatic white balancing is performed for the color signal. The white-balanced color signal is converted into a color difference signal and displayed.
