PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a catalyst composition for polymerizing ethylene at a temperature of -100 to +200 deg.C. SOLUTION: This catalyst composition contains a complex of Co[II], Co[III], Fe[II] or Fe[III] atom with tridentate selected from the group consisting of 2,6-pyridinecarboxaldehydebis(imine) and 2,6-diacylpyridinebis(imine), wherein the tridentate are three-dimensionally closely disposed around the Co[II], Co[III], Fe[II] or Fe[III] atom.
