PURPOSE: A character input device and key arrangement method is provided to arrange a plurality of vowels or consonants of Hangul, English, Japanese or other languages on one multiple contact key, and to output a corresponding key signal if one contact of the multiple contact key is pushed so that it can reduce a size of a communication device. CONSTITUTION: The device comprises multiple contact keys. The multiple contact keys can be classified into functional conversion keys(3, 4), and character input keys(2). The multiple contact keys have plural contacts which are corresponding to keys. The functional conversion keys(3, 4), arranged at an upper part and a lower part of the character input device, include a language conversion key, a page up or down key, a capital letter conversion key, a capital letter lock key, a tab key, a space key, an enter key and other function keys. The character input keys, arranged at a center of the device, include vowel keys and consonant keys. The vowel and consonant keys can be arranged on left side keys and on right side keys, respectively. Also they can be arranged according to an alphabetical order, a usage frequency or a letter association.
