PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To easily and surely discriminate whether a data cartridge exists in a cartridge engaging assembly or not. SOLUTION: A device which detects the data cartridge in a cartridge engaging assembly (30) is provided with a signal emitter (45) which is arranged adjacently to the cartridge engaging assembly and a signal detector (40) which is attached to the cartridge engaging assembly and detects a signal from the signal emitter and generates an output indicating whether the data cartridge exists in the cartridge engaging assembly or not on the basis of the detected signal.
