PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a polysaccharide derivative having fixed hydrophobicity, excellent in stability, and having an introduced functional group rich in reactivi ty. SOLUTION: This polysaccharide derivative is structured as the following: at least one kind of chemical group selected from a class A (acetic ester, propionic ester, butyric ester, methyl ether, end ethyl ether group) is contained in the chemical groups bonding to carbon atoms of an anhydromonosaccharide unit which forms the polysaccharide derivative; and at least one of carbon atoms to which any chemical group selected from the class A does not bond is converted into aldehyde, ketone or carboxy group; or at least one of the carbon atoms specified in the above bonds to at least one kind of chemical group selected from a class B (aldehyde, ketone, carboxy, amino, halogen, and epoxy group). The derivative has the fixed hydrophobicity, is excellent in the stability, and has properties which conventional materials never have, while keeping properties required as a material for a film, a plastic or the like.
