PURPOSE: An apparatus for controlling a multistage press in which an operator is not required to open presses one by one in driving the multistage press so that working speed is increased, and the press is automatically opened whenever it reaches a set time so that quality of a pressed article is improved, and a method for controlling the apparatus are provided. CONSTITUTION: The apparatus for controlling a multistage press comprises a key input part into which the number of processes required in each presses(3-5) for article forming and time required for the processes are inputted, and which controls action of the apparatus; a memory(11) in which information on the number of processes required in each of the presses(3-5) and the time required for the processes that are inputted by the key input part is stored as a map table; a control part(10) in which upper and lower dies(1,2) of each of the presses(3-5) are pressed by heating plates(6a-6c) by driving a cylinder(7) when inputting driving signals so that synthetic resin raw materials filled in each of the presses(3-5) are pressed to be formed, wherein an operator injects synthetic resin raw materials required for the subsequent process of a specific press into the press by driving the cylinder(7) so that each of the presses are opened or closed whenever it reaches a required time from the order of short cycle in each processes of the respective presses(3-5) according to the map table stored in the memory(11); and a display part(12) for displaying a corresponding press and the subsequent process accordingly when the cylinder(7) is driven by controlling of the control part(10) during pressing operation so that a specific press is opened.
