[Also in Division G6] Radioactive liquid is decontaminated by contacting with partly sulphonated bitumen of high surface area to remove radioactive ions, and subsequently heating the bitumen to convert it to a form having a low surface area and so fix the radioactive products. The sulphonated bitumen may be used in powdered granular, or porous form or as thin sheets or strips, and may be in the hydrogen or sodium state. In examples, an aqueous solution containing Ca, Mg, and Sr<SP>85</SP> is treated; volume reduction is improved if ethylene diamine tetra-acetic acid is added to complex the Ca and Mg ions. |
