PURPOSE: An optical system for use in a projection system is provided to make a device slim by improving the structure of a color quad and making an incident axis and a project axis vertical. CONSTITUTION: An optical system for use in a projection system includes a first to a fourth polarizing beam spitters(41-44) arranged in a predetermined row/column, a first G retardation foil(45) for converting a phase of a G light selected among lights inputted by installing on an input side of the first polarizing beam splitter(41), an achromatic rotator(46) for converting a phase of a light passing through by installing between the first polarizing beam splitter(41) and the fourth polarizing beam spitters(44), a B retardation foil(47) for converting a B light selected among lights passing through the first polarizing beam splitter(41) by installing between the first and the second polarizing beam splitter(41,42), an R retardation foil(48) for converting a phase of an R light passing through by installing between the second and the third polarizing beam spitters(42,43), a color quad(40) composed of a second G retardation foil for converting a phase of a G light passing through by installing on the other side of the third polarizing beam splitter(43) installed thereon the R retardation foil(48), a B liquid panel(51c) installed on the other side of the second polarizing beam splitter(42) installed thereon the R retardation foil(48), an R liquid panel(51a) installed on the opposite side of the second polarizing beam splitter(42) installed thereon the B retardation foil(47) and a G liquid panel(51b) installed on the other side of the fourth polarizing beam splitter(44) installed thereon the achromatic rotator(46).
