PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an original reader capable of reducing design labor and cost needed for velocity control and image data processing by preventing a drive communication system from being subjected to out of step and a velocity from being unstable. SOLUTION: In the case of simultaneously moving a carriage at a velocity V1 and a sheet through at a velocity V2 in the A direction of the figure, the velocity V of an original image read by a CCD 10 is calculated with V=V2-V1. When the velocity V being unmagnification is defined as 100 mm/sec, the velocity V of the original image read by the CCD 10 with the carriage velocity V1=90 mm/sec and the sheet through velocity V2=100 mm/sec is defined as V=10 mm/sec, and a scale factor becomes 1000% compared with unmagnification. The variable power of the original image can be performed without deteriorating image quality with a range wider than in the conventional practice by simultaneously moving the carriage and the sheet through at velocities different from each other in this way.
