PURPOSE: A method for selectively initializing an NV(Non-Volatile) memory in a mobile communication terminal is provided to prevent an unnecessary NV memory write operation and protect necessary data by dividing data stored in the NV into several groups, forming indexes in the groups, and separately initializing each group. CONSTITUTION: NV data are downloaded in a fixed position of an EEPROM(Electrically Erasable and Programmable Read Only Memory) according to an item(S101), and a rebooting is performed(S103). An index value for indicating a currently tested NV group is compared with a group index value stored in an NV(S105). If the index value for indicating the currently tested NV group is greater than the group index value stored in the NV, a changed index value is added to the newly downloaded index value of the NV group and the index value of the NV group previously stored in the NV and it is judged whether the update is performed(S109). If the both index values differ, the position of the groups is moved according to the added NV(S113). If the added NV groups are determined, the corresponding groups are initialized according to an initial value of the updated program, and a new NV group is increased(S115,S111).
