PURPOSE: A router for banner advertisements and a method for driving the same are provided to make a client automatically connected to an advertiser's URL contained in a router when he starts Internet surfing so that a relevant banner advertisement can be displayed on the client's terminal system. CONSTITUTION: A router for banner advertisements is comprised of a service propriety check module(201), a packet direction appointment module(202), an HTTP server(203), a CGI unit(204), a packet header decompression module(205), and a database module(206). The service propriety check module(201), composed of a packet source address/destination port check part(201A) and a time interval check part(201B), checks whether an advertisement service is to be provided for a packet supplied to the router The packet direction appointment module(202) contains a packet header storage unit(202A) to store the header information of received packets and a packet header modification unit(202B) to change the destination addresses of packet headers into router web server addresses. The HTTP server(203) transmits an advertising message to a client when a modified packet is received from the packet direction appointment module(202). The CGI unit(204) accesses an advertising web server in order to transmit an advertising message according to the command of the HTTP server(203), opens a new advertising window, and reconnects the client to a requested server. The packet header decompression module(205) decompresses a packet header so that an HTML document made in the CGI unit(204) can be responded to an associated client. The database module(206) comprises a client address storage part(206A), an interval time storage part(206B), and an advertising server address storage part(206C).
