PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a fuel injection device of a diesel engine capable of reducing the produced amount of soot and HC by easily and rapidly detecting or judging a main injection combustion completing timing and performing a post- injection near the timing. SOLUTION: In the diesel engine in which a main injection is performed near a top dead center in a compression stroke and a post-injection is performed in an expansion stroke, by using such an event that a time when the density of O2 in exhaust gas is lowered in reverse pulse pattern after a main injection approximately matches a time when a diffuse combustion is completed, the time of completion of diffuse combustion of main injection fuel, i.e., the time when a heat release rate becomes approx. 0 or below is easily and rapidly detected based on the density of O2 in he exhaust gas detected by a linear O2 sensor. Then the post-injection is performed at the time to reduce the produced amount of soot and HC.
