PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an absolute encoder in relation to an rotary encoder for detecting an angle, specifically capable of reading patterns while rotating at a high speed. SOLUTION: The encoder reading device reads the position of the encoder by projecting a pattern on the encoder on a light receiving means with light from a light source means. The light source means synchronizes with a shift pulse for moving the electric charge to a transmission gate of the light receiving means and irradiates pulses sufficiently shorter in time than the time interval between shift pulses (accumulation time).
