The height and width of articles on a conveyer are measured by the numbers of photocells in two banks which are obscured as each article passes, and the length of each article is measured by determining the time taken for it to pass the photo-cells. These three factors are multiplied together to give an approximate value of the actual volume. The maximum values of the article dimensions are also stored and multiplied to give the " cubed " volume. A weighing machine on the conveyer determines the weight of each article. The actual volume, " cubed " volume and weight are supplied to an accumulator which may be arranged to stop the conveyer when a predetermined value of volume, weight or number of articles has been reached, e.g. corresponding to the capacity of an aircraft freight compartment. The actual and " cubed " volumes are also multiplied by a constant to obtain an " equivalent weight " value which is compared with the actual weight, the largest of the two values being passed on to a computer which also receives a manual or record input giving details of destination &c. for each article concerned, whereby the cost of transportation may be computed and recorded. |
