The transport system, having a supporting and traction cable (6, 7) for passenger cabins (10), running in a loop between departure and arrival stations and connected to a drive, has a cable tensioner (15) which varies the tension of the cable so that its slack after the tensioner lies within a predetermined range regardless of the number of cabins suspended from the cable. The cable tension is varied by a power cylinder controlled automatically by the system's operating rate and/or by a cable slack detector.
