PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a Reed-Solomon decoder and decoding method for use in digital communication or storage system. SOLUTION: The fast Reed-Solomon decoder comprises a storage section, a section for calculating the error position and error value from data being inputted in units of 2m from the storage section, and a section for controlling the calculating section to output a decoded signal by correcting errors by the input of the calculating section, the error position and the error value. Reed- Solomon codes of various length can thereby be decoded and processed at high rate.
