PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To efficiently transmit and receive original images in which one face/ double-face images are mixed without lowering communication compatibility as much as possible. SOLUTION: Picture information in which one face images and double-face images are mixed is transmitted and received by switching a one face protocol and a double-face protocol during one piece of communication so as to use the double-face protocol in the case of transmitting the double-face images and also to use the one face protocol in the case of transmitting the one face images under the control of a CPU 22. In the case a transmitter omits the transmission of rear-face picture information corresponding to certain picture information because picture information read from the rear face of the original by a reading circuit 14 is almost all white or the like, switching is made to the one face protocol to transmit the picture information on the front face.
