The invention relates to an ingot mold for continuously casting a molten metal, particularly for continuously casting a molten steel. The ingot mold comprises walls (3-6), which enclose a casting space (2) and of which at least one wall (5, 6) can be displaced with regard to the other walls (3, 4) in order to alter the opening cross-section of the casting space (2). The displaceable wall (5, 6) has at least one lateral surface (9-12), against which, when the displaceable wall (5, 6) is at rest, the wall (3, 4) that is adjacent to the lateral surface (9-12) rests while being subjected to the action of force. The invention also relates to a method with which the displacement of an ingot mold with a variable opening cross-section can be accomplished. The inventive ingot mold makes it possible, also during displacement, to reduce to a minimum the risk of melt entering gaps located between the walls of the ingot mold, and to prevent a cold welding of the metal surfaces sliding on top of one another. To these ends, at least one opening (19-22) is formed inside the lateral surface (9-12) and a fluid flows out of this opening as the displaceable wall (5, 6) is being displaced.
