Production of polyetherurethane thickeners (I), comprises: (A) drying an ethoxylated fatty alcohol; (B) adding an aliphatic di- or triisocyanate in a reflux apparatus at 90-110 deg C under a nitrogen atmosphere; and (C) stopping the reaction after a maximum of 3 hours when the isocyanate (NCO) content is less than 0.1 weight.%. An Independent claim is also included for cosmetic compositions containing polyetherurethane thickeners of formula (Ia) or (Ib). R<1>-R<3> = 6-22C alkyl or alkenyl; x, y, z = 1-10; and k, m, n = 10-200.
