The device has at least one voltage conversion unit (1) and an ignition unit (3) arranged between the voltage conversion unit and the gas discharge lamp (4). A storage capacitance unit is arranged in parallel with the voltage conversion unit and before the gas discharge lamp. A microcomputer unit controls charging of the storage capacitance, discharging of the capacitance and firing ignition unit.
