The invention relates to having separate voting receptacles or ballot boxes for each candidate disposed in a voting area. Voters insert voting tokens having the same mass, into the voting receptacle associated with the candidate of their choice. To count the inserted tokens for each candidate, these are weighed, thereby requiring no sorting or examination of each voting paper, as is generally current practice. According to other embodiments, tokens are counted as these are inserted with an appropriate counting device. Furthermore, voters are restricted to inserting only the requisite tokens by a token sensing element and closure element, which are in operative association with the voting receptacle and the aperture thereof. In addition, the token sensing element provides an output signal whereby inserted tokens are counted. Also, an authorized official or utilizing an entry-sensing device at the entrance into the voting area, provides an output signal therefrom, for opening of aperture closures. This also facilitates voter control as well as a reconciliation of voters and tokens inserted into the voting receptacles to validate the vote count.
