1,190,112. Carboxymethyl cellulose, guar gum and algin compositions. FMC CORP. 31 Jan., 1968 [13 Feb., 1967], No. 4983/68. Headings C3F and C3U. A water-insoluble, water-dispersible composition comprises, by weight, 85-95 parts of disintegrated material containing more than 50% of #-1,4-glucan (prepared by a combination of chemical degradation and mechanical attrition of a cellulosic source material) and 15-5 parts of sodium CMC which has a D.S. of 0À75 Œ 0À15, the composition being characterized by forming in water a stable, thixotropic gel wherein at least 1% and preferably 30% of the particles have a size not exceeding 1 micron in any one direction. It may be prepared by adding the CMC during the said attrition or by any process which ensures intimate mixing of the components, followed by, e.g. drum or spray drying. Comparative examples disclose the use of CMC having a D.S. in the range 0À38-1À4, and the replacement of CMC with hydroxyethyl, hydroxypropyl or methyl cellulose, guar gum or algin. |
