<p>An electrochemical cell (103) comprises a proton exchange membrane (PEM) (17) with an anode (19) positioned on one side and a cathode (21) positioned on the other side thereof. Platinum catalysts are present between the PEM and each respective anode and cathode. A multi-layer screen (31) is placed in contact with the anode and an electrically conductive, compressible, porous pad (105) is placed in contact with the cathode. Cell frames (35) are placed in peripheral contact with the metal screen (31) and the compression pad (105) to contain fluids therein and electrically-conductive separators (111) are in contact with the metal screens (31) and the compression pad (105) to axially contain fluids therein. A plurality of cells may be arranged in series, in a bipolar configuration, without requiring a separate compression pad between cells.</p> |
