Novel salts I in which R is of 6-24 C atoms and is a saturated or ethylenically unsaturated aliphatic hydrocarbon radical, an alkaryl hydrocarbon radical with an alkyl portion of at least 6 carbon atoms and a mononuclear aryl portion, or the hydrocarbon portion of abietic acid; R 1 is H, or C 1-4 alkyl; R 2 is C 1 _ 2 alkylene; R 3 and R 4 are C 1 _ 4 alkylene, C 3 _ 4 hydroxyalkylene or an alkylene oxide adduct of said hydroxyalkylene group containing 1-15 moles of alkylene oxide per hydroxy group therein; X is SO 3 M or -OSO 3 M; M is H or a cation with a charge of +1; x is 0-15; y is 0 or 1; A is R or R-CO-N(V)-R 5 -; B is H or T or together with A and N forms a radical IV except that if A is R-CO-N(V)-R 5 -, B is H; C is H or T; V is H, C 1-6 alkyl, C 2-6 hydroxyalkyl or an alkylene oxide adduct thereof containing 1-15 moles of alkylene oxide of 2-4 carbon atoms per hydroxy group therein; R 5 is C 2-6 alkylene, or C 2-6 hydroxyalkylene or an alkylene oxide adduct thereof containing 1-15 moles of alkylene oxide of 2-4 carbon atoms per hydroxy group therein; Cl is C 1-6 alkyl, or C 2-6 hydroxyalkyl or an alkylene oxide adduct thereof containing 1-15 moles of alkylene oxide of 2-4 carbon atoms per hydroxy group therein; and T is Cl or -R 3 (OR 4 ) x X are prepared by forming an aqueous solution of compounds II and III in which n and z are 0 or 1 and the sum of n and z is 0 or 2, increasing the pH to 10-11 and then reducing it to below 8.
