Characterizing and/or detecting a binding complex comprising: (a) forming a linkage of binding partners so that binding partner (B1) and binding partner (B2) form a sample complex (SC) and binding partners (B3 and 4) form a reference complex (RC); (b) applying a force to the linkages so that SC or RC is separated; and (c) determining which complex has been separated, is new. Characterizing and/or detecting a binding complex comprising: (a) providing a first binding partner (B1), a conjugate (C) of second and third binding partners (B2, B3) and a fourth binding partner (B4); (b) forming a linkage of binding partners so that B1 and 2 form a sample complex (SC) and B3 and 4 form a reference complex (RC); (c) applying a force to the linkages so that SC or RC is separated and (d) determining which complex has been separated, is new. Independent claims are also included for the following: (1) an apparatus for the process; and (2) kit for the performing the method or for use with the apparatus of (1).
